Abstract
Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS) was introduced by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) as a horizontal application platform necessary to address the need for a new platform with unified features, common elements, quality of service, open standardized interface for all existing and future multimedia applications and services. IMS is a promising candidate to drive the telecommunication network towards Next Generation Networks. This paper presents an IMS Client that is compliant to the 3GPP, internet engineering task force and the European telecommunications standards Institute. Though work has been going on for the development of the IMS Client by other researchers, such clients were found to not address memory and processing power limited mobile devices. The proposed IMS Client was developed under the Java 2 Micro-Edition platform in order to be deployed within mobile devices. The implementation and demonstration of the IMS Client on the IMS testbed are presented. The presented IMS Client was able to perform the IMS functionalities such as registration, session establishment and text messaging.
