Abstract

This paper is a discussion, with special reference to mixing, on turbulent flows whose boundary conditions are more complicated than those of simple plane shear layers. Recent work at Imperial College will be used to illustrate (i) the unexpected behaviour of some complex flows and the crucial experiments needed to explore them, (ii) the modern measurement techniques which are especially useful in complex flows with mixing, (iii) the general needs of calculation methods for such flows. I hope that the paper will provide a bridge between the preceding papers on calculations and the following papers on experiments, and also help to remind people that simple shear layers are rather rare in practice.
