Abstract

The slope of the blunting line for Armco iron under mixed mode I/III loading was determined experimentally using stretch zone width measurements. It was found that the experimentally measured blunting line slope was always greater than that predicted by the existing empirical relation. The effect of mixed mode I/III loading on fracture toughness in Armco iron was also determined. It was found that there is a significant decrease in fracture toughness with increasing mode III loading. This was explained on the basis of the fracture mechanism in Armco iron as well as the deformation field ahead of the crack tip under mixed mode I/III loading.
