Abstract

Religious fundamentalism has suddenly become a matter for international concern Extensive, serious studies of the phenomenon have been carried out. What explanations do they offer for the appearance of fundamentalism? Hasthe development of modern society provoked a crisis in values and belief systems? These studies on the global level seek least common denominators for the phenomenon; this paper proposes that a closer analysis on the regional level in the Middle East is more revealing. An introduction to Jewish, Shi'ite and Evangelical responses to change helps clarify the interaction of forces in the region and aids our understanding of the problem.
