Abstract

This article, originally given as one of the “Rediscovering Vatican II” Lectures at Catholic Theological Union in Fall, 2012, puts the Council’s Decree on the Church’s Missionary Activity ( Ad Gentes ) in the context of the entire Council’s concern for the church’s mission. It then sketches the tortured history of the document, offers a short summary of its six chapters, and lays out a few contemporary directions for missionary thinking and practice in conclusion.
