Abstract
Abstract The classical missing-cell estimate used in the randomized block design is unbiased but does not have minimum variance when one or both effects are random. The unweighted least squares estimate of the appropriate cell mean is also unbiased and has smaller variance than the usual missing-cell formula in both mixed and random randomized block designs. This is illustrated using the cell-means model.
