Abstract
(mis)gendering Sandow Isha Sinai (bio) Much of mainstream political ideology carries the notion that discrimination and oppression are things of the past. This misguided thought is largely a result of capitalism’s drive to obscure the structural under-pinnings of raced, classed, and gendered oppression. For many of us who bear the heaviest loads of this oppression, it can be a comforting fiction—we can feel, for a time, as if the world is a mismatch of competing but equally considered voices, us among them, with no rhyme or reason or structural logic. There are moments, however, when we are instantly and viscerally reminded that the world is cohesive, that it does have a structural logic, and that the structural logic does not recognize our existence, though we exist nonetheless. (mis)gendering is a brief enactment of this process.
