Abstract

Abstract Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana Mill) and pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) were planted on bare and grassed reclaimed strip-mine areas between 21 June and 5 July 1977. On both sites, tubelings of both species, inoculated with Pisohthus tinctorius [(Pers.) Coker & Couch] were planted in untreated (control) spoil and in holes (minisites) with highly amended spoil. Examinations made 14 months after planting revealed that: (1) minisite preparation improved seedling survival on grassed plots; (2) survival on bare control plots was better than on grassed control plots; and (3) frost heave was a greater problem on control plots than on minisites.
