Abstract
The effects of a preferential oxidation (PROX) catalyst introduced inside a single cell PEFC are analyzed in this work. The purpose of introducing the PROX catalyst on the anode side is to create an environment conducive for the CO oxidation. The PROX catalyst investigated in this work is platinum on alumina that employs cobalt as a promoter. The PROX catalyst was introduced as a coating on the anode fuel flow channels and the change in cell performance was examined by comparing the polarization curves. Different concentrations of CO were fed to determine the CO tolerance of the cell in the presence of the PROX catalyst. The cell was also tested in the presence of the oxygen-bleed operation where oxygen was fed in front of the anode fuel stream. The results indicate an increase in the cell performance which is attributed to the presence of the PROX catalyst.
