Abstract

A novel substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) fed horizontally polarized end-fire magneto-electric (ME) dipole antenna is proposed. The antenna utilizes 3 layers of substrate to form an open-ended SIW with horizontally polarization which acts as magneto dipole. Two pairs of metal strips are added as electric dipoles. It possesses the advantages of the ME dipole such as symmetrical radiation patterns, low backward radiation, low cross polarization and wide beamwidth. A SIW 90 degree twist and a 1 × 8 SIW power divider with equal amplitude and phase distribution are designed to feed the antenna array. The antenna array has a bandwidth of 2.2 GHz for |S11| < −10 dB, a low cross polarization of less than −30 dB and gain up to 15.5 dBi. A prototype is fabricated and the measured results agree well with the simulated ones.
