Abstract

Adıyaman, formerly known as Hısnımansur, was a district of Malatya Sanjak under the Elâzığ Province during the First World War and the National Struggle. Adıyaman was not occupied during the National Struggle, however, it did not keep quiet about the occupations right after the Armistice of Mudros around itself and throughout the country. For this purpose, assistance was provided to the regions in need. Many militia forces from Adıyaman and its surroundings were sent to help the occupied cities against the French invasions in the region. The occupation of İzmir also caused great sorrow and reaction in Adıyaman, and telegrams protesting that occupation were sent to the relevant authorities by the local administrators and notables of Adıyaman. Similarly, apart from those reactions against the occupations during the National Struggle, people of Adıyaman did not remain insensitive to the separatist activities in the Eastern and South-eastern Anatolia. Adıyaman and its surroundings supported the National Struggle movement during the years of National Struggle. The Branches of the Association for teh Defence of Rights were founded in Adıyaman, Kahta and Besni. Hacı Bedir Agha of Kahta actively participated in the defences of Antep and Urfa with his subordinates and made a tremendous endeavour during the National Struggle to save these regions from the French occupation. Furthermore, the fact that Hacı Bedir Agha of Kahta and people of the region stood by the National Struggle, taking a stand against the plot of Ali Galip against Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his friends was a major breakthrough that had an impact upon the course of the National Struggle. Reşit Agha of Besni and Hacı Bedir Agha of Kahta represented Adıyaman and its environs as deputies in the First Parliament.
