Abstract

The Common Agricultural Policy has been the bedrock of the EEC since its inception. However, milk quotas and monetary compensatory amounts are obstacles to the 1992 programme. This article discusses the prospects of removing the health and hygiene barriers to intra-Community trade in milk, and agreeing mutually acceptable product standards for dairy products. The future of the milk marketing boards in the UK is considered, particularly in the light of a pending European Court decision on the legality of their charging a levy on producer processors and retailers of milk.
