Abstract

This volume investigates migration and mobility in higher education from the perspective of life event analysis. The introduction describes the theoretical and methodological approach for analyzing educational trajectories in higher education. The contributions in the volume focus on different stages, such as the decision to enter higher education, continuance or drop-out from higher education and the transition from university to the labour market. The main research question is which social mechanisms explain success or failure in educational and professional careers of persons with migration background or mobility experience. The contributions take the selection processes in secondary school into account, but also relevant family resources, motivation and competences. The introductory chapter explains how migration, mobility and inequality in higher education are interconnected. Regarding inequality, three groups of students are distinguished: students with migration background, international students and refugees (interested in) entering university. The chapter reviews the state of the art of research into migration inequalities in the transition from school to university, educational success in higher education and transition to the labour market. It concludes with a heuristic model describing the research field, the different transitions and groups of interest, thus providing a framework for locating the different chapters of the volume.
