Abstract

Multiple pathogens can cause spinal cord damage showing a symptomatology similar to that of traumatic spinal cord injury, including: metameric pattern of motor and sensory loss, loss of sphincters control and dysautonomia. Onset form, course of the disease, damage location. Longitudinal and traverse extent, prognosis and, frequently, treatment, depend on its etiology. Magnetic resonance is the complementary test of choice in myelopathy suspicion. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, which also plays an essential role in the establishment of prognosis. The main inflammatory, infectious, vascular, tumor and deficiency diseases, affecting spinal cord, will be reviewed below. In all cases, symptomatology, clinical signs, progression, diagnostic tools, treatment, neurological and functional recovery will be assessed.
