Abstract

ABSTRACTThe article discusses the spatial sense of the Polish prefix po-, which typically denotes motion away from the deictic centre. The prefix shows peculiar grammatical behaviour, which may be explained within the framework of cognitive linguistics, in particular by means of image schemas and perfective is a solid object and imperfective is a fluid substance metaphors. The prefix po- is shown as distinct from other Polish prefixes. It is argued that po-prefixed verbs of motion display characteristics of both perfective and imperfective verbs, forming a category of middle aspect.
