Abstract

The microstructures of MgZnZrRE (RE = rare earth) alloys with low Zn and high RE contents have been studied. In the alloy containing high grade Y, there are an X phase at the grain boundaries and a small square-shaped Mg 24Y 5 phase in the interior of the grains. The structure of the X phase is found to be an 18R modulated structure with a period of 0.26 nm. In the alloys containing misch metals rich in Y or Ce, a net-shaped Mg 12RE phase at the grain boundaries and small square-shaped Mg 24Y 5 phase in the interior of the grains are present.
