Abstract

Recent results have shown that the ductility of the TiAl-base ([alpha][sub 2] + [gamma]) alloys can be improved by adding V, Cr and Mn alloying elements and the ductility of Ti[sub 3]Al-base alloys have been significantly improved by adding the [beta]-phase stabilizing elements, such as Mo, V and Nb. In the present work, the ordered [beta] phase (called [beta][sub 2] phase hereafter) in the Ti-48Al-2Cr and Ti-46Al-2V-2Cr alloy has been determined. The microstructure of these alloys and the crystallographic relationships between various phases in the alloys were characterized. The behavior of the [beta][sub 2] phase in a lamellar alloy during compression deformation at room temperature was investigated.
