Abstract
The dependence of the piezoelectric and the fracture mechanics properties on the microstructure of the ceramics with composition Pb(Zr0.3Zr0.7)O3·Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 has been studied as a function of the grain size. The specimens with an average grain diameter from 1.8 to 4.7 µm were examined. Both the piezoelectric strain and stress constants decreased with decreasing grain size below about 3 µm. The fracture toughness value KIC gave a maximum at grain size of about 3 µm. The control of the the grain size, therefore, should be required for the application of this ceramic to actuators and other devices.
