Abstract

Refractory high-entropy composites are reported to have excellent high-temperature properties. However, few works have been conducted to study the effect of sintering and melting on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Here, Re0.5MoNbWTaC0.8 composite prepared by sintering and arc melting was investigated. The sintered composite shows inhomogeneous microstructure, exhibiting lower strength and plasticity. In contrast, the melted composite composed of numerous fine lamellar eutectic structures with semi-coherent interface, has high compressive yield strength of 1.39 GPa, ultimate strength of 2.42 GPa and plasticity of 9.3%.
