Abstract

It is necessary to improve the high temperature strength and maintain reasonable room temperature toughness of refractory high entropy alloy. A novel type of HfMoScTaZr refractory high entropy alloy was prepared by vacuum arc melting equipment. The microstructure of the alloy was analyzed by XRD, SEM, TEM and DSC. The hardness and mechanical properties of the alloy were measured by microhardness tester and micro-electronic universal testing machine. The results show that the refractory high entropy alloy is a single disordered BCC solid solution structure with lattice constant a = 0.3387 nm, alloy density about 9.28 g/cm3, Vickers microhardness about 9400 MPa and yield strength σ0.2 = 1778 MPa. The compressive yield strength of the alloy at room temperature, 800 °C, 1000 °C and 1200 °C are 1778, 1118, 963 and 498 MPa, respectively. The mechanical properties of HfMoScTaZr are better than that of most refractory high entropy alloys
