Abstract

The concept of microstructural path is developed for a wide range of solid state nucleation and growth transformations including recrystallization. A new analytical expression relating the stereological properties, S v and X v, is derived for the microstructural path function for randomly-nucleated, shape-preserved nucleation and growth transformations. Experiments based on computer simulations of the geometric aspects of these transformations have confirmed the validity of the theoretical development. When microstructural data from a study of recrystallization of cold-worked iron are examined in the light of the newly derived path function, excellent agreement is achieved.
