Abstract

In this effort, the impact of mold material on the microscopic behavior and mechanical performance of AlSi5Cu3 alloy was investigated. The AlSi5Cu3 alloy was cast in the metal and sand molds with equal cavity size and the characteristics of castings were evaluated. The metallographic analysis revealed that, due to the rapid solidification, the number of grains is 2.17% higher and the grain area is 3.71% less compared to sand mold casting. Moreover, due to the formation of more refined grain structures, metal mold casting has greater mechanical properties compared to sand mold casting. The findings revealed that the hardness, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and impact strength of metal mold casting samples were improved by 8.82%, 10.74%, and 12.5% compared to sand mold casting samples.
