Abstract

Microstrip patch antennas are low profile antennas that are mostly preferred for high frequency applications, where the antenna size and structure is condensed. For MIMO applications, array of antenna elements are required in the structure to support the signals for transmitting over multiple channels. To have the feature of frequency diversity in MIMO applications, every element in the antenna structure is required to transmit at different frequencies. Such an antenna can be made feasible by incorporating the concept of frequency re-configurability in the antenna elements of an array of micro strip patch antenna. The re-configurability of frequency is attained by varying the resonating length of radiating element. RF semiconductor switches like FETs, PIN diodes, MEMS switches are used for reconfigurable antennas. The proposed antenna provides frequency reconfiguration by switching ON or switching OFF the PIN diodes. Thereby frequency re-configurability with three resonant frequencies (3.963 GHz, 3.074 GHz and 2.95 GHz) under three different modes of operation are achieved.
