Abstract

The concept of nuclear deformation, i.e., anisotropic nuclear mean field, is one of the most useful and important building blocks of the unified model. In this paper, several different (but not necessarily orthogonal) views on the microscopic origin of nuclear deformation are presented. The common denominator is the interplay between the symmetry-breaking particle-vibration interaction and the symmetry-restoring pairing force.
