Abstract

We examine second-harmonic generation in a composite medium consisting of a single microsphere embedded in a potassium diphosphate crystal. If the incident pump wave is linearly polarized with respect to one of the crystal’s axes, then all the second-harmonic radiation produced is due to the presence of the microsphere. We evaluate the angular distribution of the second-harmonic radiation and find it to be roughly quadrupolar in nature. The total cross section is of the order of 5 × 10−8r02, where r0 is the sphere radius at pump powers of 10 MW/mm2. This represents an enhancement of greater than 100.
