Abstract
This article presents the development of air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs), with summarization of their basic principle, device dispositions, bioenergy production and wastewater treatment performances, potential applications, and possible future directions. The performance of air-cathode MFCs is affected by such factors as electrode materials, preparation, and microbial community. These factors are manipulated in air-cathode MFCs by using specially allocated electrodes constructed with specified cell configurations or materials with physically or chemically modified surfaces. Air-cathode MFCs perform well in electricity generation and wastewater treatment. Additional possible applications and future directions are also described for the development of air-cathode MFCs.
