Abstract

The microbial flora of the exudates of 100 consecutive cases of chronic suppurative otitis media was investigated. All but one case yielded at least one organism and 35 cases produced two or more organisms. 146 isolates were obtained of which 121 were aerobic bacteria, 21 were anaerobic bacteria and four were fungi. Anaerobes were present in 20 per cent of patients. At the time of the investigation 34 patients were receiving antimicrobial agents. Antibiotic sensitivity tests were carried out on all bacterial isolates. The possibility of an anaerobic infection should not be overlooked when considering the treatment of otitis.
