Abstract
The nutritive value of Chaetomium microbial biomass protein (MBP) samples grown on glucose or molasses was evaluated in combination with soya-bean protein in diets of chicks and piglets. Performance records and digestibility values observed with chicks fed on these blended proteins compared well with similar blends of brewers' or Torula yeast with soya-bean protein. Body weight gains in relation to protein intakes were expressed in terms of net protein ratio and protein efficiency ratio values for these dietary protein sources for chicks and the results were similar. In a practical diet for weanling pigs, the fungal MBP grown on molasses replaced 50% of the dietary protein supplied by soya-bean meal with excellent results.
