Abstract

Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) intercalated with CO32−, an anionic clay mineral, is applied for aqueous ammonia fuel cells as an electrolyte. PtRu/C and Pt/C are used for the anode and the cathode catalysts, respectively. Pelletized Mg-Al LDH powder is used as an electrolyte. The fuel cell works from room temperature to 80 °C with 50% of relative humidity of the air, and the power density increases with an increase in the cell temperature. This indicates that Mg-Al LDH allows the fuel cell working at rather high temperatures compared with cell using typical organic polymer anion exchange membranes.
