Abstract

Mexico and the United States should take measures to work more closely on a wide range of ocean research issues, and Mexico should provide more support for ocean science activities and joint research, according to an October 26 report prepared by a joint committee of the US. National Research Council (NRC) and the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias.“At present, the lack of an institutional focus for ocean sciences in Mexico hinders cooperation between the nations,” states the report, “Building Ocean Science Partnerships: The United States and Mexico Working Together” “The Mexican federal government should examine the merits of creating an agency responsible for marine affairs and ocean information services, including ocean sciences and technology either as a new agency or placed within an existing one.”
