This 2004 metro newspaper study on N = 53 sports columnists writing for metro newspapers with circulations in excess of 100,000, identifies and discusses their sources for writing controversial opinion in the second most read newspaper section by males—the sports page. The sports columnist today is expected to hold the newspaper readership line in our overkill competitive entertainment society.
