Abstract

A baromechanical method was proposed for the study of mechanical properties and the physical state of polymers, according to the pressure of gas or vapour to be absorbed, which is based on determining deformation while subjecting the sample to variable stress at different pressures. The method enables physical transitions to be detected in polymers, which are in sorption equilibrium with a given gas or vapour atmosphere, and limits of operating pressure to be determined over which the polymer may be employed. Baromechanical curves are shown for a number of polymers in ammonia.
