Abstract

IR spectroscopy of internal reflection and IR spectroscopy of transmission were used to study the effect of erosion taking place by the action of glow discharge on polyamide films on the variations of IR spectra and the dependence of the rate of erosion on film thickness. Methods were described to calculate the dependence of the rate of erosion on polymer film thickness. It was shown that when studying polyamide films of up to 15 μm thick erosion does take place by the action of glow discharge, but to a slight extent so that the changes occurring in IR spectra arer due mainly to structural variations in the layer near the surface. A reduction in the thickness of the films studied to 8 μm results in a sudden increase in the rate of erosion.
