Abstract
In this paper the authors investigate a study for life cycle assessment of a hybrid photovoltaic-wind system feeding a reverse osmosis desalination unit. Double stage configuration in the reverse osmosis desalination process using spiral modules is presented. The two environmental indicators (total energy requirement and energy payback time) were computed for photovoltaic subsystem, wind subsystem and reverse osmosis desalination unit. Life cycle assessment evaluation of the photovoltaic subsystem was studied for three types of photovoltaic module: mono-crystalline (mono-Si), polycrystalline (poly-Si) and amorphous silicon (a-Si). Three models of total energy requirement of the studied system were elaborated. In reverse osmosis desalination unit, the life cycle assessment is studied for three motor-pumps, two stages of pressure vessels (9 FILMTEC membrane elements), three water reservoirs and three static converters.
