Abstract
The recent development of metaverses and virtual real estate markets (VREMs) has garnered a lot of media attention in the last two years. In this paper, we go beyond the discourse on the hyper-speculative nature of crypto markets to look at how the digitalization of virtual land (markets) is pushing toward new kinds of virtual spaces and real estate assetization. Doing so, we propose three analytical entry points for further research on VREMs, namely (1) the fabric of a market for virtual lands, (2) the encoded relations to virtual lands and (3) the digital assetization of virtual spaces.
