Abstract
Abstract The nematic liquid crystals such as MBBA, OH-MBBA, EBBA exhibit a large number of solid phases, e.g., on fast cooling, a frozen state may be formed, and metastable phases are obtainable by annealing. X-ray measurements have been performed to characterize the phases structures of the non-aligned samples. The solid smectic structures of the non completely-ordered phases were determined. Kinetics of the phase transformations have been obtained from the temporal evolution of the X-ray smectic peaks in the case of EBBA and OH-MBBA. An Avrami law allows one to explain these kinetics. If we assume a thermal nucleation, we find for the dimensionality d of the nuclei growth d = 1 for EBBA, d = 2 for OH-MBBA.
