Abstract

The local magnetic fields at the 207Pb nuclei in lead dioxide with the rutile structure (β-PbO2) are measured by the NMR method at temperatures down to 20 K. It is shown that the values of the local fields and the character of their temperature dependence correspond to the Knight mechanism for the shifts of the NMR spectra in metals. The band structure of this compound is calculated with allowance for relativistic corrections. A conjecture is made as to the nature of the metallic conductivity of this oxide on the basis of the results obtained.
