Abstract

This chapter examines the status of metalanguages in translator education and training. It first summarises the role of metalanguages and terminologies in education to give a background context. The chapter then summarises the concept of competence in translation and examines the status of metalanguages in terms of competence categories. Based on these clarifications, it situates the role of metalanguages in the process of translator education. (Meta)languages in education can be broadly divided into two types, that is, languages for promoting interactions between teachers and students and among students, and languages for transferring subject content. The chapter discusses the requirements for metalanguages in translator education setups. The metalanguages we develop correspond to the translation competence and linguistic and textual competence in ISO categories, which partly overlap the strategic and methodological competences, and service provision in EMT.
