Abstract
This paper discusses a quantum-mechanical metal-insulator transition that occurs in an anisotropic electron-hole system with the electrons and holes separated and confined to a double quantum well. The critical concentration nc of carriers in the system above which the excitonic (insulating) phase becomes an electron-hole (metallic) phase is investigated, along with its dependence on the distance between wells D.
