Obesity is a chronic condition that impacts every field of medicine. For the practicing gastroenterologist, the risk for colon cancer as well as colon polyp development and the treatment of gastroesophageal disease are improved by weight reduction. Therefore, understanding the metabolic basis of obesity as well as the management of obesity is a priority for the practicing clinician.
