Abstract

Abstract (Messiahs, Fetishes and Power Struggles between "Big Men" in the Democratie Congo). — The 1991 National Conference in the Congo solidly placed the country on the way to "democratization". Three major political leaders thus emerged. P. Lissouba (the current president), B. Kolelas and D. Sassou Nguesso. This conference and, in particular, the terms used to express alliances and rivalry between these three men suggest that recent politics in the Congo should be interpreted in religious terms: messianism at odds with magie and witcheraft and also with Christianity as these "big men" fight it out in the field of "powers".
