Abstract
UO2 is widely used as a nuclear fuel in the light water reactors. Irradiated UO2 nuclear fuel exhibits an intriguing bimodal distribution of bubble number and size at the nanoscale. To uncover the underlying mechanisms, we investigate bubble characteristics under varying damage events using the continuum phase-field method. Our findings suggest that the occurrence of bimodal pattern is primarily due to the biased trapping of supersaturated vacancies and gas atoms by bubbles, rather than gas resolution effect.
