Abstract Mesomorphisms of several cholesteryl monohalopropionates have been studied. The β-monohalopropionates exhibited a cholesteric liquid crystal phase, but the α-monohalopropionates had no mesophase. These results were explained by the lateral dimensions of rigid lathlike cholesteryl compounds.
