Abstract
The rapid advances in taechnology have increased the need for qualified personnel in the business sector in recent years. This has revealed how important vocational education, which trains intermediate staff for the job market, is in the development and progress of countries..As for the importance of vocational education, this study aims to reveal the problems which are experienced in vocational education in Turkey and to offer possible solutions. The research was carried out using the qualitative research method and the phenomenology design, which is one of the qualitative research designs. The participants in the research were determined by using the easily accessible sampling technique within the framework of the purposeful sampling method. With the determined method and technique, the study group of the research was composed of 8 vocational teachers working in vocational high schools in the city center of Amasya. The obtained data were collected with a semi-structured interview form created by the researchers. The data obtained with the semi-structured interview form were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. The researchers coded the problems experienced in vocational education as student-based, parent-sourced, teacher-based, educational practices, physical and hardware-based, and business-related themes and found some problems as follows. It has been found that unsuccessful students do not want to work in the field they graduated from, adaptation problems and absenteeism in enterprises, disinterested parents, lack of experience, lack of motivation, insufficient internship, opening programs in places where there is no business area, lack of training materials, physical planning mistakes and negative attitude of the employer. The researchers found some solution suggestions by coding the solution suggestions for the problems under the themes of student-based, parent-sourced, teacher-based, educational practices, physical and hardware-based, and business-based themes. Students should be admitted by examination, vocational high schools should be given priority in engineering recruitment, graduates should be followed, cooperation should be increased, promotions should be made, professional development trainings should be made, internship periods should be extended, managers who understand vocational education should be appointed, the number of vocational courses should be increased, enterprises should provide economic support and equipment support, the state support should be increased, cooperation should be made with professional chambers and businesses, project schools should be opened in the regions and career steps should be established. As a result, since vocational education has a dynamic structure, it is constantly changing. Although policies towards the development of vocational education have been followed for years in Turkey, it has been concluded that vocational education schools and vocational education institutions still have some problems today and these problems are urgently resolved in order to increase employment and have a strong economy.
