Abstract

Meriania aurata C. Ulloa, D. Fernandez & D. A. Neill (Melastomataceae) from the Llangantes National Park, Ecuador, is described and illustrated. It resembles M. hernandoi L. Uribe; both species have large leaves with an auriculate base and a scutum at the petiole insertion, a robust inflorescence, yellow calyx, orange petals, and purple thecae, but the new species is distinguished by the conspicuous coriaceous external calyx teeth, conspicuous auricles, and scutum present only adaxially.
