Abstract

The closing of an academic science/technology library is generally thought of as an extreme to be avoided. While sustaining separate departmental libraries may be preferred there is good reason for academic library planners to consider the closing of one or more libraries in order to merge them with another or other libraries. Given changes in library technology and the publishing industry, a merger offers the potential of improved patron services while helping the library prepare for a greater emphasis on digital information. This paper explores issues concerning the future of academic science/technology libraries and why the merging of academic departmental libraries should be used as an option in planning.
