Abstract

AbstractA study of the visible and near infrared spectra and the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibilities of the compounds MnSO4·2 HgO, CoSO4 · 2 HgO, NiSO4 · HgO · H2O and CuSO4 · 2 HgO has led to the conclusion that in all compounds studied the direct environment of the high‐spin ions is a probably distorted octahedron M(O)6. Coordination to the sulphate ions only takes place in the nickel compound. Mercury oxide as a ligand is very close to water in both the spectrochemical and the nephelauxetic series. All four compounds were found to be magnetically non‐dilute.
