Abstract

AbstractA study of the visible and infrared spectra and the magnetic moments of the addition compounds of mercury(II) oxide with some MII transition metal selenates has revealed that the metal ions in these compounds have nearly octahedral environment. MII‐coordination to the selenate ion has only been found in compounds with a HgO content below that of the basic selenate HgSeO4 · 2 HgO. Mercury oxide in its ligand field behaviour was found to resemble water closely.
