Abstract
The concept of mentoring began to appear in nursing literature in the 1980s (Andrews and Wallis, 1999). In 1987 the English National Board (ENB) refers to mentors as ‘wise reliable counsellors’ and ‘trusted advisors’ (ENB, 1987). In 2001 the ENB and the UK Department of Health (DH) formalised the mentoring and assessing roles for nurses and midwives. The mentor was defined as:
