Abstract
Background: Caregivers are often less adherent to medication due to burden of caregiving and women are often the main family caregiver. Level of burden of care and medication adherence in mentally ill women caregiver is unexplored. Aims: This study aimed to find out the levels of burden of care and its relationship with medication adherence in mentally ill women caregiver in remission. Material and Method- In this hospital based cross sectional study, 100 mentally ill women in remission were recruited as per the selection criteria and assessed with sociodemographic proforma, Zarit caregiver burden interview and Morisky medication adherence scale. Results- More than half participants experienced burden (27% mild-moderate burden, 19 % moderate to severe burden, and 7% have severe burden). Thirty nine percent of the participants had high adherence, while the rest had medium to low adherence (36% medium & 25% low). In multiple linear regression analysis, score on the role strain significantly predicted the value of score on medication adherence score. Conclusions- Among mentally ill women caregivers, higher level of burden of care and low medication adherence is common. Role strains are positively associated with medication adherence.
